The television screen in the Elizabeth Swann's main cabin was a harsh intrusion of the outside world, a stark contrast to the quiet calm of the open sea. John Storm, Dan Hawk, and Cleopatra were watching the BBC World News Service. The screen showed a grim-faced Jill Bird, the veteran correspondent, her voice a somber, professional lament.

"Sources within the Vatican confirm what has long been whispered," she reported, her face a solemn mask. "The health of His Holiness, Pope Peter Benedict, is failing rapidly. Specialist physicians have given him only days, perhaps hours, to live. Preparations for a conclave to elect his successor are already well underway, a somber countdown to a new era for the Catholic Church."

The image shifted to a live feed of the Vatican, the cameras lingering on the closed doors and the silent Swiss Guards. John felt a cold dread settle in the pit of his stomach. The ethereal voices in his sleep, the feeling of being pulled towards Rome, all of it now had a name: Pope Peter Benedict. The man was dying, and John felt an impossible, almost heretical, burden of responsibility.

His phone buzzed. It was a secure line. Dr. Roberta Treadstone of Blue Shield was on the other end, her voice clipped and urgent.

"John, listen carefully. The UN's World Health Organization has issued a final report. They've exhausted every possible avenue. The Pope's condition is irreversible."

Then, a new voice cut in, one John knew well. "Dr. Treadstone, this is a matter for the WHO, not a rogue agent," said the crisp, authoritative voice of a WHO official, a voice of exasperated bureaucracy.

"This isn't an official channel," Treadstone shot back, ignoring the interruption. "This is a friend-to-friend call. We need a miracle, John. He is a good man, a voice of reason in an increasingly unreasonable world. Without him... I'm afraid what will happen next." Her voice trailed off, leaving the unspoken fear hanging in the air.

John hung up the phone, his mind reeling. The whispers, the feeling of a divine mission, had led him to this. The ultimate test. The clock was ticking.

He looked at Dan and Cleopatra. Their faces mirrored his own turmoil. They had just escaped a deadly conspiracy, and now they were sailing into the heart of another, this time with a dying Pope as the prize.

"If we can do this," HAL's synthesized voice cut through the tense silence, "if we can use the ARK's genetic data and the capabilities of the Cybercore and Replivator technologies to cure him... it would be the ultimate test of my prowess, and of the ARK. It would be a definitive proof of concept, a signal to the world that science and faith can work together."

John’s internal conflict was a raging storm. He was a scientist, not a faith healer. He had a conservationist's heart, not a messiah's. But the thought of Pope Peter Benedict, a man he had never met, dying alone in the Vatican, was a torment. He was a good man, a voice of reason. A modern Isaiah. And John was being called to answer.

"Are we really going to do this?" Dan asked, his voice low.

Cleopatra put a hand on John’s arm. "Some things are not a matter of choice," she said, her eyes filled with a new, ancient understanding. "They are a matter of destiny."

John looked at the television screen, at the grieving crowds gathered in St. Peter's Square. He thought of his uncle's ARK, of the Replivator technology, of the voices in his head. And he knew, with a sudden, chilling certainty, that the journey was no longer about escaping the past. It was about facing the future, and becoming the good Samaritan he was destined to be. The race was on.

VOICES FROM ABOVE

The Elizabeth Swann sliced through the Mediterranean Sea, its silent, solar-powered thrusters a stark contrast to the roaring chaos John Storm had just left behind. He had rescued Cleopatra, a woman of ancient blood and modern wit, and now they were heading back toward the relative calm of international waters.

But the calm was an illusion. The whispers began in his sleep, a subtle, ethereal voice that spoke in parables he couldn’t quite grasp. When he woke, the voice persisted, a gentle hum at the back of his mind. It spoke of a path, of a city on seven hills, and of a man who was nearing the end of his time. "To the River Tiber," it said, like a compass of the soul. "Follow the sun's path to the city of God."

The whispers intensified, a constant, low murmur that became a relentless drone. John, a man of logic and science, at first dismissed it as a residual effect of the Cybercore Genetica. He had been through a lot. The stress was getting to him.

Yet, he felt compelled to turn the ship's course. He knew he was sailing blindly, following a feeling that was more a premonition than a navigational point.

"What's the plan, John?" Dan Hawk asked, peering at the new, baffling course on the ship’s display.

"I... don't know," John admitted, running a hand through his hair. "I just feel like we're being pulled."

On the bridge, HAL, the onboard super-nano-computer, began to receive anomalous signals. His internal diagnostics, linked to John’s BioCore brain implant, registered a series of telepathic signals that HAL had no protocol for. The data was there, a stream of pure information, but it was coming from no known source.

Cleopatra, who had been studying an ancient chart, looked up. "I hear it too," she whispered. "A voice, like the breath of the desert wind. It speaks of a good man, a man named Isaiah, who is in need."

In the heavens, a divine hand was at work. Jehovah, the Lord God, saw the hearts of these mortals. He saw a man who, though not a devout believer, was a good Samaritan, Christian to the core. He saw a woman of ancient wisdom who carried a pure spirit. He saw Will Bates, the inventor of the Cybercore Genetica, and Baron Heinrich von Richthofen, the philanthropic mind behind the Replivator, two men who had worked on a human project, not for evil, but for a twisted form of good. He saw that they were all His children.

The Lord God knew the world was in need of a new miracle, a sign that divine intervention was still a living force. And Pope Peter Benedict, a man of reason and understanding, had already used his influence with the UN's World Health Organization to call for a global initiative to save the planet. A man of faith and science, a man who, like Isaiah of old, was a voice of righteousness in a wicked world.

"A helping hand," Jehovah said, looking upon the Pope. "He knows the world needs this."

The voice in John's head was no longer a murmur; it was a clear, unyielding call. “He is a good man. Go to him. His time is short.” John knew he had a choice, and it was a choice that transcended the world he knew. He could continue on his planned course, or he could answer the call of a man he didn't know, for a reason he couldn't comprehend.

The UN's World Health Organization had asked John if his technology could cure cancer.

Finally, John looked at Dan and Cleopatra. He took a deep breath. "To the River Tiber," he said, and with that single act of faith, the whispers in his mind ceased, replaced by a quiet, settled calm. They were on a mission now. A divine one. 

Jesus, walking on water. Sometimes, a miracle is modern science in action, with those looking on, not fully understanding how such happenings could be achieved. Other Biblical events could be explained, but we think are better left alone.
