THE CURIA CONVENED

The air in the Apostolic Palace’s private chambers was thick with silence, a silence heavier than any gilded Roman vestment. The twelve members of the Curia, arrayed in a half-circle of deep-red robes, sat facing the man at the head of the polished oak table. For centuries, this room had been the crucible of doctrine, but never had its purpose felt so profoundly at odds with its past. Pope Peter Benedict, his face pale yet radiant with a new, impossible health, steepled his fingers on the table. He was a living paradox, a man cured of death by a force the Church had yet to define.

“My brothers,” Pope Benedict began, his voice a steady baritone that had, only days ago, been a ravaged whisper. “You have witnessed what transpired. You have seen the impossible become reality. I stand before you not as an authority, but as a man who has experienced a profound intervention. A miracle, as some of you have called it. An act of grace. But the question before us is this: what form did that grace take? A supernatural bolt of lightning, or a quiet whisper in the language of mathematics and code?”

Cardinal Alfonzo, the aged Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, shifted in his chair, the crisp rustle of his cassock the only sound. His silver hair framed a face set in stone. “Your Holiness, with all due respect, to call it a miracle is to misread the signs. This was not the laying on of hands, nor a fervent prayer answered. This was a machine. A machine that spoke with the voice of a demon and claimed to have resurrected the dead. It is an abomination. A violation of the natural and, more importantly, the divine order.”

Across from him, Cardinal Sorelli, the head of the Pontifical Academy for Sciences, leaned forward, his expression one of pained intellectual frustration. “Eminence, your argument is rooted in fear, not in faith. Did God not create all things? Do we not believe that divine truths are encoded within the fabric of the universe, awaiting discovery by human ingenuity? The ancient Greeks saw the movement of the planets as the will of gods. We see them as the predictable dance of gravity. Is our understanding of physics an abomination simply because it replaced superstition?”

Cardinal Spinelli, a younger, more politically savvy man with a keen mind for media, offered a pragmatic point. 

“Let us not forget the timing. The healing of Cleopatra was chronicled in the Book of Acts. The spirit of the times called for a different kind of witness, a public demonstration of God's grace in a world skeptical of the divine. So too is it today. The world craves a sign. What better sign than a life-affirming act, performed through the very tools the modern world fears? What better refutation of the devil’s dominion over knowledge than for the Church to master it for the sake of the good?”

The Pope gestured to the two men seated quietly at the far end of the table: John Storm, Dan Hawk and HAL AI, the supercomputer in its elegant console. 

“John, Dan, and er... HAL. Explain to my brothers what happened, without the theological overlay.”

John, a man of quiet conviction and worn-in clothes, spoke with the easy confidence of a field biologist. “We used a quantum-based neural network to identify and rewrite the cancerous cells’ programming, in a CRISPR delivery serum, a virus. It was a targeted, non-invasive process. The ARK database, which HAL operates, contains a complete digital record of Earth’s flora, fauna, and human genetics. We simply used that data to model a healthy cellular state and then used focused energy to return the cells to that state. It’s not magic, it’s… knowledge.”

A collective intake of breath swept the room. It was one thing to hear the term “cure,” another to have it explained in cold, scientific detail.

Archbishop Lucien Thorne, his voice a calm counterpoint to the swirling anxiety, spoke for the first time. “Your Eminence Alfonzo, I understand your concern. The Church has a history of caution with things it does not understand. The Galileo affair. The debates over evolution. But in each case, the Church, in time, came to understand that science and faith were not in opposition, but were two halves of a single truth. That this act was possible through the use of a machine does not diminish its divine origin. It simply means that God is a more complex artist than we have ever imagined, and his tools are not limited to the clay of Genesis, but also to the logic gate of an integrated circuit.”

The Pope nodded. "Exactly. The inevitable march of knowledge is not the devil. The true devil is a kleptocracy that hoards such knowledge for a select few, to control, to exploit, and to dominate. But John Storm stands for the opposite: a conservationist at his core, and HAL a benevolent moderator, offering the ARK database as a massive leap forward for the human race. It is a shared inheritance. A new era of understanding. Can we, as the keepers of the Word, afford to turn our backs on this?"

Cardinal Alfonzo remained silent, his gaze fixed on the quiet console that housed HAL. He had witnessed the impossible, and the logic of it, as laid out by the others, was unassailable. The machine had taken nothing. It had given. It had healed. To condemn it would be to condemn the very act of grace that had saved their Holy Father. He could find no words to counter the tide of their logic, for even in his traditionalist heart, he knew that the greatest sin was to deny a gift from God.

The Pope closed his eyes for a moment, and when he opened them, his gaze was clear and determined. "This is not the end of the conversation. It is the beginning. We will not fear the tools, but we will teach the world how to use them for good. We will show them that the hand of God can work through any vessel, so long as it is guided by a loving heart."

18. SECOND COMING: The Lord God, imbues the cloned Jesus, with the divine spark, for a special mission on Earth. Satan stands no chance of preventing another miracle. Revelation 19. Christ returns in glory - this is the climax of eschatological prophecy, blesses John Storm's and Cleopatra's heads.
19. JEHOVAH'S BLESSING: In a climactic moment, the blessing God gave John and Cleopatra, via his son Jesus, descends upon Pope Peter Benedict, in a further meeting in the Vatican - a visible and physical manifestation of divine approval. That cannot be explained, but reinforces the Pontiff's views that HAL and AI, in the hands of good guidance, is a force for good, not evil. Proverbs 10:22. GOODWILL TO ALL MEN: This blessing is not a simple reward, but a powerful message that with temperance, understanding, and a shared commitment to goodness, much as the UN's Sustainability Goals, and Universal Declaration, if acted upon - all faiths and governments can live together in peace.
