The original design called for a Cybercore Genetica nano-computer to act as a cerebral conduit, a way to guide the neural genesis. Without it, the clone is… an empty vessel. We are venturing into an abyss, and there is no guarantee we can fill it.”

Their desperation had led them to a series of frantic, covert overtures. Father Malachai Virelli had personally initiated contact with Baron von Richthofen, the reclusive leader of Neuwelt Rittertum. The Baron, a man who saw himself as a modern philanthropist, was the key to their final gambit. Malachai had offered unimaginable sums, but the answer from the Baron’s cohorts, Franco Francisco, Klaus von Kolreuter, and Rudolf Kessler, was a chilling and definitive “No.”

“Baron von Richthofen sees no gain in this, Brother,” Malchus reported, his face grim. “He and his associates, even Safiya Sabuka, believe John Storm and the reborn Queen are forces for good. They say they will not go against a divine hand, no matter the level of inducement.” The irony of being thwarted by a group of would-be eugenicists was not lost on the fanatics.

The irony was also not lost on Cardinal El-Amin, who watched the scene with thinly veiled contempt. He had been a voice of caution, a quiet prophet in the wilderness of their zeal. “The Book of Romans speaks of this,” he intoned, his voice quiet but firm. “Paul warns of the struggle between flesh and spirit, of our sovereignty and divine justice. But the crushing truth followed swiftly. The courier from Jack Mason had just arrived with the purchased Replivator. The machine was a marvel, but the accompanying documents were a disaster. Jack Mason, in his ignorance, had only sold the tangible machine. He had seen the intricate, handwritten schematics and research papers as "worthless notes" and had destroyed them in the chaos of his cover up. The most crucial part of the technology, the guide to how it was to be used, was gone forever. Years of painstaking experimenting gone up in smoke. The realization hit them like a physical blow. Their grand scheme, their prophesy, their final gambit to save a dying world was based on a flawed premise. They had the body, but they lacked the soul. The impending Armageddon, the very situation they had tried to prevent, seemed not just likely, but inevitable. And they, in their arrogance, had just pushed the world one step closer to it.
